I want to first apologize to Ryan for asking for pictures of his bloodied and blistered hands. I was dead serious in my request but the absurdity of it didn’t register until he simply didn’t respond. I’m kind of an idiot when it comes to my passions. Sometimes love blinds and I just want to make that clear.
When I set out to write this article I had no idea I was going to get the kind of feedback I did from Ryan Ricks of the Little River Band. I expected something great, but the marketing gold he handed us is what fueled my illicit request.
After two successful articles featuring Nathan Richardson and Bryan Scott I wanted to delve deeper into the precision and quality of PCS. Nate and Bryan hit some major key points, strength, affordability, this next article I want to provide detailed examples of what makes PCS such a game changer.
I started with a quick message to Dave-O, “Who’s next?” We chatted for a few and came up with a three in a row bang’em up interview combo. Ryan Ricks became the first name on that list because PCS needs to identify why a drummer of his resume would become loyal to such a small unknown entity like PCS?
I was excited to say the least and started right. It was nothing less than a struggle though to develop questions to get at that point. Everything I wrote was basically something I could find in his bio or online. The heart of what I wanted to ask wasn’t coming from “he’s a really, really, good drummer”, so I backed up and asked Dave-O if Ryan and I could just talk. I’m trained in interviewing and observation and know how to yield information no one expected. I knew Ryan had to have a great deal of real and meaningful data concerning why he was using PCS and I wanted to hear the way his voice expressed it (with emotion).
Thank you, Ryan for taking the time to chat. I more than enjoyed our conversation and PCS thanks you for supporting us and saying what you did here.
Most of what is said is verbatim, but not really but almost. Ryan did not fill out the usual questionnaire. I tend to paraphrase some mainly because I did not record the conversation and took scattered barely legible “notes”. But, and I say this with assured certainty, Ryan will agree with what is “said” and I was so taken by our conversation I will never forget.
PCS Drumstick Blogger: Ryan, part of why I wanted to talk to you personally was to gain insight to your expertise and why you would choose PCS. How did you first find out about PCS?”
Ryan Ricks: That’s actually a good story. Dave-O came to a show, found his way backstage, and basically shoved them in my hands. I remember thanking him, but that it was a little strange that he got back stage just to get me these sticks. It wasn’t until sometime later I used them, but once I started playing with them I almost couldn’t believe it. They were actually something special.”
Bloggers “Commercial” Note: Dave-O tracking Ryan down and getting a set of sticks into his hands is 100% pure “Dave-O, PCS grassroots” marketing. Dave-O in a nutshell, period, more so an inspirational marker of the family orientated American spirit characteristic of what makes PCS so special. Dave-O loves and lives this. I’m so glad Ryan shared this story and Dave-O thanks for all the hard work!
PCS Drumstick Blogger: Before we get into what turned you on fully to them, would you mind giving us some background of your expertise beyond what we can find in your bio. The meaning here, what are some detailed specific “things”, terms, jargon, that sort of thing that you can relate that explain to the sophisticated and intelligent drummer (because all drummers are) why PCS is so revolutionary in the whole drumstick sphere? And, Ryan, I’m still amazed by what you said next…
Ryan Ricks: I think I get what you’re saying. I’ve been playing my whole life. There was a time when things slowed down and I worked in the corporate world, but one day the opportunity to play in Little River Band arose and I took it. The course of my life I have developed a particular way I like to play and I expect my sticks to keep up with that. The specific design a working drummer tends to relate to, how they hold the stick, the taper, response, and how hard they hit, for me, there’s a fine line or weak compromise between stick quality and the specific tone or response of each hit. I’ve become proficient at understanding what I like.
*READ THIS NEXT STATEMENT, PLEASE*
You have to understand PCS reinvented the drumstick. You hold up a drumstick and look at it and say, well it’s a drumstick, and how do you change that or make it better? I personally don’t know and I’m sure it’s a big secret for you guys, but Dave-O did it and now PCS is all I play. PSC finely balances that divide I was referring to beyond my expectations.
PCS Drumstick Blogger: Wow! That’s a powerful statement! And I have to agree. I’ve highlighted the quality and affordability, but it never really occurred to me the extent of what this truly meant. Can you elaborate on this point, specifically, how PCS changed or helped you play that you would make a statement like that?
Ryan Ricks: The quality of PCS are unsurpassed, they last longer than any sticks I’ve used and I’m someone who breaks or loses sticks like crazy.
*READ THIS NEXT STATEMENT TWICE, PLEASE, AND THEN I WILL STOP YELLING, Thanks*
When I play a show, every show, the sound guy or stage hand has to change my bandages, usually twice because the blisters break open and bleed everywhere. When that happens I can’t hold onto the sticks, and of course, there’s the pain.
Since I started using PCS (Peridore Custom Sticks) I no long get blisters, no bandages, no blood, no pain, and I don’t lose sticks. The O-Ring makes all the difference. PCS is really onto something with this. It’s completely aided me as a drummer. In a way I never thought possible.
PCS Drumstick Blogger: *Spits coffee, monocle drops from eye*
The rest of the conversation/informal interview was centered on this last statement. I was awestruck by what Ryan said and for the most part, I just kept making him repeat it and asking him if he was sure that was true! I mean, for me to be able to write that here, wow! And just to reiterate:
The boy no longer has bandaged bloodied hands because of PCS.
The boy no longer has bandaged bloodied hands because of PCS.
There’s not much really to say or write after that. The overall tone of the interview with Ryan was very positive and he had only positive things to say about Dave-O and PCS. To have someone of Ryan’s background, a true road tested, professional drummer, respond to PCS like that was absolutely amazing and thanks again, Ryan, for taking the time to share your experiences (and coping with my unusual request, of course, who has pics of their bloodied hands).
Anyone who may be experiencing pain or discomfort because of your current brand, please contact us here on our FB page and ask Dave-O to carve you out a set, stat!
Likewise, if you like your sticks strong and precise, made by a drummer, get at us too.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, likewise, please, like and share!
PCS really is a great, revolutionary drumstick and it will take you sharing what you read here to make it happen for us.
